The Great Conversation: The Revolution History Forgot

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Great Conversation.

Today, let’s take a moment to reflect on a part of history that changed the world…

But is rarely talked about the way it should be.

The Haitian Revolution.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, enslaved people in Haiti rose up against one of the most powerful empires on Earth…

And won.

They defeated Napoleon’s forces. Ended slavery. And created the first independent Black republic in the modern world. (Wikipedia)

But the impact of that revolution went far beyond Haiti.

Because at the same time, Napoleon had larger ambitions: A French empire in the Americas.

Haiti, then known as Saint-Domingue, was supposed to be the center of that system.

Louisiana was meant to support it.

But when France failed to regain control of Haiti…

Napoleon no longer saw value in keeping Louisiana. (Island Luminous)

And that led to one of the biggest land deals in history:

The Louisiana Purchase.

The United States nearly doubled in size because Haiti’s revolution disrupted France’s plans in the Americas. (EURweb)

Which means something extraordinary happened:

A successful slave revolt helped reshape the map of the United States.

And yet, many people barely hear about that connection.

Maybe because history often remembers empires…

more than the people who forced them to change course.

So here’s the question:

How different would the modern world look…

if Haiti’s revolution had never happened?

Take a moment to reflect.
