Through petitions, public education, and symbolic walks across the country, she helped bring national attention to a chapter of history that many Americans had never fully learned. Her efforts contributed to Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021.
What makes her story especially remarkable is that she did not begin this national campaign as a young politician, celebrity, or wealthy philanthropist.
