The Great Conversation: One Person Can Change History

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Great Conversation.

Today, let's talk about a woman many people have never heard of, yet whose efforts helped change the history of the United States.

Her name is Opal Lee.

Often called the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," Lee spent decades advocating for greater awareness of Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Through petitions, public education, and symbolic walks across the country, she helped bring national attention to a chapter of history that many Americans had never fully learned. Her efforts contributed to Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday in 2021.

What makes her story especially remarkable is that she did not begin this national campaign as a young politician, celebrity, or wealthy philanthropist.

She was a teacher.

A counselor.

A community member.

And when many people might have believed their most influential years were behind them, she continued pushing forward.

At age 89, she began a symbolic walking campaign to raise awareness for her cause. She gathered more than a million signatures and spent years advocating for a goal that many considered unlikely. Yet she persisted.

Perhaps that is the larger lesson here.

History is often taught through the stories of presidents, generals, and famous leaders.

But many of the changes that shape society begin with ordinary people who decide that something matters enough to pursue.

One person starts a conversation.

One person organizes a community.

One person refuses to give up.

And eventually, what seemed impossible begins to look inevitable.

The story of Opal Lee is not only about Juneteenth.

It is about persistence.

It is about civic engagement.

It is about the power of a single individual to influence the course of history.

Which raises a deeper question...

How many positive changes never happen because people assume they are too small to make a difference?

Take a moment to reflect.
