The Great Conversation: When Innovation Meets Speculation

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Great Conversation.

Artificial intelligence is transforming the world.

But something else is happening alongside the technological revolution:

A financial one.

In a recent article titled The AI Casino, Diane Francis examines the extraordinary amount of money flowing into companies connected to artificial intelligence. She notes that AI-related companies have added trillions of dollars to the value of the U.S. stock market since late 2022, helping turn several technology companies into some of the most valuable businesses in history.

There are good reasons for the excitement.

Unlike many companies during the dot-com boom, today's largest technology companies are established businesses generating enormous revenues and profits. AI may indeed become infrastructure as important to the next era as railroads and electricity were to previous generations.

But the article raises another possibility.

What happens when enthusiasm becomes speculation?

Markets increasingly depend on a relatively small number of technology companies. Investors are placing enormous value on profits they expect AI to generate in the future. And simply attaching the letters "AI" to a business can attract attention and investment. Francis argues that concentration, leverage, interconnected investments, and ordinary human greed could create dangerous pockets of speculation even if AI itself fulfills its enormous promise.

And therein lies an important distinction.

A technology can change the world...

and still be overvalued.

The internet transformed civilization, even though the dot-com bubble collapsed.

Railroads transformed nations, even though railroad speculation created financial disasters.

Perhaps technological revolutions and financial bubbles are not always opposites. Sometimes they grow together.

That makes this conversation larger than AI or investing.

Human beings have always struggled to distinguish possibility from certainty.

When something extraordinary appears, excitement can become expectation.

Expectation can become confidence.

And confidence can become the belief that the normal rules no longer apply.

Technology changes.

Markets change.

But human nature has proven remarkably consistent.

Which raises a deeper question...

When we encounter something with genuinely transformative potential, how do we embrace the opportunity without allowing excitement to overwhelm judgment?

Take a moment to reflect.
