The Great Conversation: Who Gets Remembered as a Founder?

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Great Conversation.
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, many people will naturally think about the familiar names connected to the nation’s birth.
George Washington.
Thomas Jefferson.
John Adams.
Benjamin Franklin.
But a recent New York Times Magazine project asks us to widen the frame.
It highlights what it calls “everyday founders,” people whose lives shaped the American Revolution but whose stories were often overlooked, forgotten, or buried in the archives.
The project reminds us that the Revolution was not only shaped by the towering few, but also by the “faceless many.”
Among them were Native leaders trying to protect their people’s future, farmers resisting corruption, women using writing to influence public opinion, religious dissenters demanding freedom of conscience, Black soldiers and thinkers challenging the contradiction of liberty in a slaveholding society, common soldiers enduring the brutality of war, and enslaved people using the language of freedom to claim freedom for themselves.
This changes how we think about history.
History is not only made by the people whose portraits hang in museums.
It is also made by those who walk long roads, write dangerous words, ask uncomfortable questions, endure hardship, challenge injustice, and test whether a society truly believes its own ideals.
The Revolution was not one single story.
It was many stories moving at once.
For some, it was about independence from Britain.
For others, it was about land, religion, equality, survival, dignity, or freedom from slavery.
And perhaps that is the larger lesson.
Every generation inherits unfinished promises.
Every society has people whose contributions are not fully recognized in their own time.
And every age faces its own moment of rupture and possibility.
Which raises a deeper question...
When future generations look back at our time, who will they say helped move history forward?
