The Great Conversation: When a Civil War Stops Being Civil

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Great Conversation.

Today, let’s take a moment to reflect on something that’s happening right now… but not getting the attention it deserves.

Sudan’s civil war.

Since 2023, fighting between the national army and a powerful paramilitary group has torn the country apart…

Displacing around 13 million people.

But what’s happening now is even more concerning.

Because this may no longer be just a civil war.

Experts are warning that the conflict is becoming something bigger…

A regional struggle.

Neighboring countries are getting pulled in. Foreign alliances are forming. Weapons, fighters, and influence are crossing borders.

What started as an internal conflict…

is beginning to spread.

And behind it all is something deeper:

A competition for power, influence, and control —including control over key routes like the Red Sea, one of the most important trade corridors in the world.

So this raises a serious question:

When outside powers get involved…

does a civil war stay civil?

Or does it become something else entirely?

Take a moment to reflect.
