The Great Conversation: What Happens When We Decide a Place Is Too Hard to Save?

Hello everyone, and welcome to The Great Conversation.

Today, let’s take a moment to reflect on a difficult question…

What do we do when a place becomes harder and harder to protect?

Because right now, conversations around New Orleans are becoming more serious.

Rising sea levels. Land sinking. Stronger storms. Vanishing wetlands.

Some researchers are even suggesting that parts of the region may eventually become impossible to defend long-term. (Vox)

But others strongly disagree.

They argue that cities like New Orleans are not simply locations on a map.

They’re culture.

History.

Communities.

And places that millions of people call home. They also point out that billions have already been invested in flood protection and resilience systems. (The Guardian)

So this debate isn’t only about engineering.

It’s about values.

Because once we begin asking whether a city should be abandoned…

we’re also asking something deeper:

Who decides what is worth saving?

And who gets left behind when those decisions are made?

So here’s the question:

When challenges become difficult…

do we retreat…

or rebuild?

Take a moment to reflect.

And please, click the link below for more on that subject.
